The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team lost both matches on the second and final day of the competition at the University Athletic Association Round Robin #2. The Spartans were swept by No.19 nationally-ranked Carnegie Mellon Tartans and fell in four sets to the University of Chicago.
With the pair of setbacks, the Spartans drop to 15-8 overall and 2-5 in the UAA.
Versus Carnegie Mellon (19-5, 4-3 UAA), the Spartans fell by scores of 25-19, 25-20 and 25-21. Senior outside hitter Marian Barton posted the squads top kill total with eight, while sophomore setter Shannon Carroll contributed 19 assists. Defensively, sophomore libero Karina Bondelid tallied a team-high 15 digs.
Against Chicago (15-7, 6-0 UAA), the Spartans lost the match 21-25, 25-19, 25-22 and 25-18. Freshman middle hitter Haley Sims posted a team-high 12 kills on 22 total attempts for a .455 hitting percentage. Carroll registered 42 assists, eight kills and eight digs for the match. Freshman setter Faith Ellis led the defense with a season-high 13 digs.
The Spartans will be back in action at the Carnegie Mellon Quad Invitational in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Friday and Saturday. CWRU will open play against the Rochester Institute of Technology at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
