The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team defeated Hiram College in a close-played match on Wednesday night, winning a 3-2 (24-26, 25-21, 23-25, 28-26, 17-15) decision in Horsburgh Gymnasium.
CWRU's record improves to 14-5 with the win, while Hiram drops to 13-6 on the season.
Senior outside hitter Marian Barton recorded a season-high 21 kills, one shy of her career-high 22 kills set against Baldwin Wallace last season. Freshman outside hitter Brianna Lemon (15), freshman middle hitter Haley Sims (13) and freshman outside hitter Karley King (10) each added double-digit kill totals during the match for CWRU. Sophomore setter Shannon Carroll set a career-high with 56 assists, topping her previous career-high of 53 assists.
Defensively, Lemon led all Spartans with 19 digs, with Carroll picking up 15 of her own and sophomore libero Karina Bondelid adding 14 digs.
The Spartans will now turn their attention towards the second University Athletic Association Round Robin of the season hosted by Brandeis University. CWRU will travel to Waltham, Massachusetts on October 15th and 16th. The Spartans are slated to play four matches over the two days, beginning with a 12:30 p.m. meeting with 16th-ranked Washington (Mo.) on Saturday.
