Spartans Fall to No. 7 Emory to Conclude UAA Round Robin #1 in Pittsburgh

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball dropped a three-setter to No. 7-ranked Emory University in the final match of the 2016 University Athletic Association Round Robin #1 hosted by Carnegie Mellon University.

The Spartans (13-5, 1-2 UAA) conclude a tough, opening weekend of conference action and will look to get back in the win column at home versus non-conference opponent Hiram College on Wednesday October 12 at 7:00 p.m. The Eagles (14-3, 3-0 UAA) won by scores of 25-13, 25-15 and 25-22.

Offensively, senior middle hitter Kayla Pfaff, senior outside hitter Marian Barton and freshman outside hitter Brianna Lemon led the Spartan attack with six kills each. Sophomore setter Shannon Carroll recorded 23 assists.

On defense, sophomore libero Karina Bondelid totaled a team-high 12 digs, while sophomore defensive specialist Emily Wolfenbarger contributed nine.

Emory was led by Jessica Holler with 12 kills and Sarah Porter with 41 assists.

All eight UAA teams played a total of three matches this weekend. The squads will convene again in two weeks for four more matches at the UAA Round Robin #2 in Waltham, Massachusetts on October 15 -16. Seeds for the UAA Championship in St. Louis, Missouri will be determined by the records from the two round robins.
