Spartans Back on the Road then Return Home in Week Four

The Case Western Reserve University women's volleyball team will travel to Berea, Ohio to face Baldwin Wallace University on Wednesday, September 20th at 7:00 p.m. and then will play host to Heidelberg University on Saturday, September 24th in Horsburgh Gymnasium at 1:00 p.m.

CWRU Spartans (12-1)

The Spartans fell just short in a thrilling five-set match on Wednesday night, dropping a 3-2 (18-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-15, 9-15) decision to the University of Mount Union. Sophomore setter Shannon Carroll tallied 35 assists during the match and added 18 digs. Senior Marian Barton, freshman Haley Sims and freshman Brianna Lemon tied for the team lead with 12 kills during the match, while sophomore libero Karina Bondelid finished the match with 19 digs.

CWRU picked up four wins at the Bishop Invitational hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the Spartans defeated Adrian College 3-2 in the early contest, and then in the second match of the day earned a 3-2 over Denison. On Saturday, CWRU defeated Grove City in straight sets and then rallied against Defiance to win 3-2.

Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets (13-1)

The Yellow Jackets earned a four-set victory against Franciscan University on Monday night. Junior Ellen Hawkins led the BW offense with a match-high 15 kills. Freshman Shannon Ott set up the offense with 38 assists. Senior Arlayna Newcomer anchored the defense with a match-high 21 digs.

The Yellow Jackets claimed the St. John Fisher Tournament Championship on Friday and Saturday by winning all four of its matches in straight sets. BW defeated Buffalo State and St. John Fisher on Friday and finished the tournament on Saturday with wins against Alfred and Allegheny.

Heidelberg Student Princes (8-5)

The Student Princes defeated Defiance College 3-1 on Tuesday night. Morgan Strenk and Sarah Parker each had 13 kills. Junior Rachel Raimondo tallied a career-high 34 digs in the match. Senior setter Kari DiRuzza recorded 37 assists.

Heidelberg dropped two of three matches at the Wittenberg Fall Classic on Friday and Saturday. The Student Princes fell to Calvin College in straight sets on Friday. Heidelberg split their two matches on Saturday. After dropping the match with Washington (Mo.) 3-2, they swept Juniata College in straight sets.

Freshman Brianna Lemon currently leads all University Athletic Association players with 3.61 kills per set and 206 total kills…Last season, the Spartans dropped a tough 3-2 decision to Baldwin Wallace…Shannon Carroll tallied 53 assists and Marian Barton led the team with 22 kills… CWRU defeated Heidelberg 3-1 last season…Kayla Pfaff contributed 15 kills with a .429 hitting percentage, Carroll led the team with 29 assists and Barton hit .333 with 14 kills…The Spartans are averaging 11.53 kills per set, 10.61 assists per set and 1.83 blocks per set this season.
