The 2015 season served as one of the most historic in program history as the Case Western Reserve volleyball team finished the year with a 25-8 record, the most wins by the team since the 2000 campaign and the second-most ever by a Spartan volleyball squad.
After finishing the regular season with a 24-7 record, the Spartans qualified for the NCAA Championships for just the second time in program history, and claimed its first-ever NCAA Tournament victory after defeating Mary Washington in the first round of the tournament.
With a 5-2 record in the University Athletic Association, the Spartans finished in third place. The third place finish for the Spartans was the volleyball program's best finish since a third place finish in the UAA Championships in 1997.
Also a program first, the volleyball team was ranked by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, checking in at No. 24 the week of October 7.
CWRU opened the season with a 10-0 record, the best start for the program under Head Coach Karen Farrell. In the winning streak, the Spartans won seven straight matches by a 3-0 score, and eight overall through its first ten matches. Of their 33 matches in 2015, CWRU won 18 of those games by a score of 3-0.
Kauffman became the first Spartan since Tricia McCutchan in 2011 to be named to the All-UAA First Team. She finished the season with a .354 hitting percentage, the best-single season mark in school history, and is second in school history with a .289 career percentage. Kauffman also closed out the season with 108 blocks, finished second on the team with 2.90 kills per set and fourth with 21 service aces. Kauffman also became the first UAA Athlete of the Week honoree, earning the award the week of October 12, since Natalie Southard in the 2013 season.
Bogart has served as the team's captain since her sophomore year and led the Spartans with an average of 3.00 kills per set during the 2015 season. She ranks first on the team with 30 service aces, and finished second with 432 digs this season, giving her a career total of 1,061. Over her career she has tallied 1,146 kills, the eighth most in program history. She is one of only five players in CWRU history to have recorded 1,000 in both digs and kills throughout her career.
Best averaged 4.30 digs per set during her career and 4.92 per set during the 2015 season which put her at sixth on the Spartans' all-time list for digs per set in a single season. The starting libero in every game during the season, Best led the Spartans with 561 digs. Averaging 4.29 digs per set throughout her career, Best have left her mark at the No. 4 spot in program history.
Senior setter Robyn Marks concluded her career ranking eighth all-time with 1,362 assists throughout her time as a Spartan. A right side hitter, Dani Witri finished her senior season with 412 kills, 136 assists, 120 blocks and 174 digs.
At the net, junior outside hitter Marian Barton and junior middle hitter Kayla Pfaff averaged 2.79 and 1.79 kills per set, respectively. Pfaff finished second on the team with 76 total blocks and Barton finished third with 313 kills.
The freshman class proved to be full of impact players who could step in and create plays for the team. Leading the team with 6.86 assists per set, good for fifth in the all-time rankings, and 734 assists total, freshman setter Shannon Carroll played in all 33 matches this season. Freshman defensive specialist Karina Bondelid led the UAA with 0.48 service aces per set and ranks second is program history for service aces per set in a single season. Finishing third on the team with 3.09 digs per set, freshman defensive specialist Andrea Lu tallied 213 digs total.
Along with their success on the court, the Spartans volleyball team also earned a cumulative 3.49 GPA and were recognized with an AVCA Academic Team Award. Junior defensive specialist Lauren Anderson received a Department of Defense Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship.
Farrell concluded her 14th season where she has led the program to at least 20 victories in six of the last eight seasons. At the close of the 2015 season, she has tallied 377 career wins with the program.
