Spartans Edged by Hiram 3-2 on Tuesday Night

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team fell just short in a close-played match on Tuesday night, dropping a 3-2 (15-25, 26-24, 17-25, 25-21, 15-11) decision to Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio.

CWRU's record dropped to 18-4 with the loss, while Hiram raised its season ledger to 15-6.

Senior Haley Kauffman had her second-straight standout game for the Spartans, pacing the squad with 16 kills and a .429 attack percentage.  Juniors Kayla Pfaff (13) and Marian Barton (12) and senior Carolyn Bogart (10) each added double-digit kill totals during the match for CWRU.  Senior Katie Best led all Spartans with 30 digs, with Bogart picking up 20 of her own (her third-straight match with at least 20 digs), while senior Robyn Marks and freshman Shannon Carroll had 30 and 21 assists, respectively.

The Spartans dropped the first three points of the first set, and fell behind 5-2, before rallying to take 15 of the next 20 points and gain control of the game, en route to a 25-15 victory.

CWRU trailed again in the second game, but a five-point rally pulled the squad within a point of Hiram, 14-13.  After the Terriers scored to regain a two-point advantage at 15-13, the Spartans scored three-straight to take their first lead of the frame, 16-15.  CWRU built a 23-20 lead, but Hiram won four-straight points to setup match point at 24-23.  A kill by Kauffman evened the score at 24 apiece, but back-to-back points by the Terriers won the set and knotted the match a game apiece.

The third set was a different story for CWRU, with the Spartans leading the frame from wire-to-wire.  The Spartans took the final six points in the frame to clinch the 25-17 win, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.

Neither team would be able to break away from the other in a close-played fourth game, which featured a tied score at eight different points.  However, the Terriers broke away late, scoring the final three points to win 25-21, forcing a match-deciding fifth set.

After trailing 2-1 early in the fifth set, CWRU collected the next four points, including a kill from Kauffman to force a timeout by Hiram.  Following the stoppage, the Terriers would gain momentum, scoring 13 of the final 19 points to earn a win in the final set, clinching the match victory.
The Spartans will now turn their attention towards second University Athletic Association Round Robin of the season. CWRU will play host to the event on October 17th and 18th at the Horsburg Gymnasium and the Veale Convocation, Recreation and Athletic Center.  The Spartans are slated to play four matches over the two days, beginning with a 10:30 a.m. meeting with New York University on Saturday.
