WOOSTER, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team wrapped up the 2014 regular season with a split in Saturday tri-match action versus Denison University and The College of Wooster.
The Spartans (16-11) fell to Denison (13-12) in three but bounced back to defeat Wooster (7-20) in four. The team now gets set for the 2014 University Athletic Association Championship next weekend in Pittsburgh. The Spartans enter the tournament seeded fourth.
Against the Big Red, the Spartans fell by scores of 25-17, 25-22 and 25-14. Junior outside hitter Katie Best (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny), sophomore right side hitter Marian Barton (Custer Park, Ill./Reed-Custer) and sophomore middle hitter Kayla Pfaff (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) each posted eight kills. Freshman setter Jessica Justice (St. Augustine, Fla./St. Augustine) recorded a team-best 17 assists, and sophomore defensive specialist Julie Colaianni (North Olmsted, Ohio/St. Joseph Academy) led with 13 digs.
Denison was led by Rachele Lock with 12 kills and Emily Marguerite with 21 digs.
Against the Fighting Scots, the Spartans were victorious by counts of 25-18, 22-25, 25-14 and 25-19. Best led three in double-figures with a career-high 16 kills. Sophomore Lauren Gurd (Farmington Hills, Mich./Detroit Country Day) shared the setting duties with Justice as the two posted 24 and 23 assists, respectively. Defensively, sophomore Kristen Mitchell (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) racked up 16 digs.
Wooster was led by Ksenia Klue with 13 kills and Rachel Sell with 25 digs.
The Spartans open play next weekend against fifth-seeded University of Chicago at 2:00 p.m. at Carnegie Mellon University's Skibo Gymnasium. The Spartans beat the Maroons in four earlier this season.
