ATLANTA – The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team opened 2014 conference action with a pair of matches at the University Athletic Association Round Robin #1 hosted at Emory University's Woodruff P.E. Center. The Spartans were swept by the host and No. 3 nationally-ranked Emory Eagles and fell in four sets to Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.).
With the pair of setbacks, the Spartans drop to 10-7 overall and 0-2 in the UAA.
Versus Emory (19-2, 1-0 UAA), the Spartans fell by scores of 25-20, 25-19 and 25-16. Junior outside hitter Katie Best (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) posted the team's top kill total with seven, while sophomore Lauren Gurd (Farmington Hills, Mich./Detroit Country Day) contributed 12 assists and eight digs.
Against Carnegie Mellon (13-3, 2-0 UAA), the Spartans lost the match 25-19, 25-21, 21-25 and 25-13. Best posted her first career double-double with 16 digs and 10 kills. Sophomore right side hitter Marian Barton (Custer Park, Ill./Reed-Custer) led the squad with 14 kills. Junior outside hitter Carolyn Bogart (New Berlin, Wis./New Berlin Eisenhower) registered 17 digs, while Gurd and freshman setter Jessica Justice (St. Augustine, Fla./St. Augustine) posted double-figure assists with 19 and 18 helpers, respectively.
The Spartans wrap up the weekend in Atlanta against the University of Rochester (N.Y.) tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m.
