UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Led by junior outside hitter Katie Best (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) and junior setter Robyn Marks (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott), the Case Western Reserve University volleyball team opened play at the John Carroll Invitational with a 3-1 victory against Kenyon College on Friday evening at the DeCarlo Varsity Center.
The Spartans (7-3) sweep the season series with the Ladies (2-8) and will play once more at the JCU Invitational tomorrow afternoon.
Best posted a career-best 12 kills on a .370 hitting percentage and just missed a double-double with nine digs. Marks recorded her 13th career double-double with 18 assists and 11 digs.
The Spartans claimed the first two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-19. Kenyon forced a fourth with a 25-22 win, but CWRU put the match away, 25-8. The fourth set featured 15 Spartan kills against just one error in 29 attempts (.483).
Junior right side hitter Danielle Witri (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood) and sophomore right side Marian Barton (Custer Park, Ill./Reed-Custer) added to the attack with eight and seven kills, respectively. Freshman Jessica Justice (St. Augustine, Fla./St. Augustine) joined Marks in the set with 14 assists.
Defensively, sophomore libero Kristen Mitchell (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) posted 15 digs.
Kenyon was led by Lauren Kerr with 13 kills and Tierney McClure with 17 digs.
CWRU closes out the weekend on Saturday versus Mount Saint Joseph College at 3:00 p.m. The team then returns home to host John Carroll University on Wednesday, September 17 at 7:00 p.m. at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
