ST. LOUIS – The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team split a pair of matches on day two of the 2013 University Athletic Association Round Robin #2 at WU Fieldhouse. The Spartans swept the University of Rochester (N.Y.) to open the day but lost in three to No. 19 nationally ranked University of Chicago.
Case (13-14, 2-5 UAA) next competes in a road tri-match on Saturday, October 26 versus Wittenberg University and Allegheny College (Pa.) at 1 p.m. in Meadville, Pennsylvania.
The 2-5 record after two round robin weekends will land the Spartans as the No. 6 seed at the UAA Championship Tournament on November 8-9 in Waltham, Massachusetts.
Versus Rochester (8-21, 0-6 UAA), the Spartans won by scores of 25-22, 25-13 and 25-15. Freshman outside hitter Isabelle Wagner (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) and rookie middle hitter Kayla Pfaff (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) led the Spartan attack with nine kills each. Pfaff's hitting percentage of .667 was also a match best. Freshman setter Lauren Gurd and sophomore Robyn Marks (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott) paced the office with 17 and 15 assists, respectively.
On the defensive side of the net, sophomore outside hitter Carolyn Bogart (New Berlin, Wis./New Berlin Eisenhower) and second-year libero Katie Best (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) finished with 18 and 14 digs, respectively.
The Yellow Jackets were led by Jennie Ford with eight kills.
Chicago (19-8, 6-1), the Spartans' sixth nationally ranked opponent of the year, won by scores of 25-23, 25-23 and 25-16. Bogart and Wagner led the Spartans with nine kills apiece. Marks totaled 19 assists, and Best recorded 23 digs.
The Maroons got strong performances from both Jasmine Mobley and Maren Loe, who recorded 23 combined kills.
