CLEVELAND – Despite a spirited effort, the Case Western Reserve University volleyball team dropped a three-setter to No. 4 nationally ranked Emory University (Ga.) in the final match of the 2013 University Athletic Association Round Robin #1 at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
The Spartans (9-12, 0-3 UAA) conclude a tough, opening weekend of conference action and will look to get back in the win column at home versus non-conference opponent Oberlin College this coming Wednesday, October 9 at 7:00 p.m. The Eagles (21-1, 3-0 UAA), who won by scores of 25-18, 25-9 and 25-21, finished a perfect weekend without dropping a single set.
Offensively, sophomore outside hitter Carolyn Bogart (New Berlin, Wis./New Berlin Eisenhower) was the top Spartan performer with eight kills. Sophomore setter Robyn Marks (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott) recorded 29 assists.
On defense, sophomore libero Katie Best (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) totaled a team-high 14 digs, while Bogart contributed 11.
Emory was led by Cat McGrath with 10 kills and Sydney Miles with 31 assists and seven kills.
All eight UAA teams played a total of three matches this weekend. The squads will convene again in two weeks for four more matches at the UAA Round Robin #2 in St. Louis on October 19-20. Seeds for the UAA Championship in Waltham, Massachusetts on November 8-9 will be determined by the records from the two round robins.
