Spartan Volleyball Rallies Twice to Beat BW in Five

CLEVELAND – In a match that included a marathon third set, the Case Western Reserve University volleyball team rallied twice from a game down to defeat cross-town rival Baldwin Wallace University on Tuesday evening at Horsburgh Gymnasium. The Spartans claimed the match by scores of 19-25, 25-18, 30-32, 25-19 and 15-4.  

The Spartans (9-9) get back to the .500 mark in their final competition prior to hosting the 2013 University Athletic Association Round Robin #1 on Saturday and Sunday, October 5-6.

With the loss, the Yellow Jackets fall to 7-11.  

In addition to staging off game point several times in the lengthy third set, the Spartans also rallied from a 7-0 hole in the fourth.

Offensively, the team hit stride numerous times with the return of sophomore setter Robyn Marks (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott), who had missed 15 matches due to injury. The second-year setter posted 39 assists, 14 of which aided sophomore middle hitter Haley Kauffman (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) in matching a season high for kills.  

Also in the attack, freshman right side hitter Marian Barton (Custer Park, Ill./Reed-Custer) totaled a career-best 13 kills, while freshman outside hitter Isabelle Wagner (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) contributed 12.

On defense, sophomore libero Katie Best (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) tallied a match-high 29 digs. Marks added a dozen.

The Yellow Jackets were led by Colleen Bonacci with 14 kills and six total blocks.

The Spartans open the UAA Round Robin next Saturday versus New York University at 10:30 a.m. and Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) 12:30 p.m.
