PITTSBURGH – The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team fell to Geneva College (Pa.) in four and No. 12 nationally ranked Otterbein University in three on the final day of the 2013 CMU DoubleTree Classic at Skibo Gymnasium.
The Spartans (8-9) return home to host cross-town rival Baldwin Wallace University on Tuesday, September 24 at 7:00 p.m. at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
Sophomore middle hitter Haley Kauffman (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) was named to the All-Tournament Team with 20 kills and nine blocks in four matches this weekend.
Geneva (9-4) defeated Case for the second time this season with scores of 16-25, 25-14, 28-26 and 25-19 this afternoon. Junior middle hitter Natalie Southard (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) led the offense with 10 kills in 23 attack attempts, while freshmen Lauren Gurd (Farmington Hills, Mich./Detroit Country Day) and Tessa Copperrider (Perrysville, Ohio/Loudonville) split the setting duties with 15 assists apiece.
Defensively, freshman outside hitter Isabelle Wagner (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) racked up a season-high 24 digs, and Kauffman totaled a career-best seven block assists.
Otterbein (12-4), the Spartans' third ranked opponent this season, won by scores of 25-15, 25-13 and 25-18.
Wagner was Case's top attacker with six kills, and Gurd totaled 12 assists. On defense, sophomore libero Katie Best (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) posted 13 digs.
Tuesday's match with BW is team's final competition prior to the University Athletic Association Round Robin #1 at home on October 5-6.
