ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team earned a pair of victories to conclude a 3-0 weekend at the 2013 Purple Raider Classic hosted by the University of Mount Union at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex. The Spartans defeated Kalamazoo College (Mich.) in four and swept Hanover College (Ind.).
In addition, freshman outside hitter Kenya Moyers (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield Heights) was named to the All-Tournament Team. For the weekend, the local product posted 21 kills and six total blocks.
The Spartans (7-5) move back above the .500 mark and return home to host Heidelberg University on Tuesday, September 17 at 7:00 p.m. at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
Kalamazoo (7-2) had lost only once prior to its match versus the Spartans, who hit .295 as a team en route to scores of 25-12, 25-18, 27-29 and 25-9.
Sophomore middle hitter Haley Kauffman (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake) continued a standout weekend with a career high-tying 13 kills and no errors in 26 attack attempts. Kauffman also spiked 13 kills in a win last night. Junior middle hitter Natalie Southard (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) joined Kauffman in the attack with 12 kills and just one error in 23 tries.
Freshman setter Lauren Gurd (Farmington Hills, Mich./Detroit Country Day) orchestrated the offense with 45 assists, and sophomore libero Katie Best (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) paced the defense with a career-high 28 digs. Kauffman led in blocks with two solo and one assist.
Versus Hanover (4-6), the Spartans won by scores of 25-18, 25-13 and 25-21.
Southard finished in double-figures again with 12 kills against only one error, while Kauffman contributed six kills.
Gurd posted her second career double-double of 23 assists and 10 digs, while Best led the defense with 15 digs.
