CLEVELAND – Playing its second top 10 opponent of the young season, the Case Western Reserve University volleyball team was swept by No. 9 University of Mount Union on Wednesday evening at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
The Spartans (4-5) dip below the .500 mark and will look to get back on track at Mount Union's tournament, the Purple Raider Classic, this Friday and Saturday, September 13-14. Case plays three matches in Alliance beginning with a 7:00 p.m. matchup versus Transylvania University (Ky.) on Friday.
Led by Nicole Snyder with 14 kills on a .542 hitting percentage, the Purple Raiders (9-0) won by scores of 25-19, 25-14 and 25-13 to remain unbeaten for the year.
Case was led offensively by sophomore middle hitter Haley Kauffman (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) with five kills, while freshman setter Lauren Gurd (Farmington Hills, Mich./Detroit Country Day) paced the attack with 13 assists.
Defensively, the Spartans picked up 11 digs from sophomore libero Katie Best (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny).
