Singer Breaks School Record at Joe Banks Invite

Highlighting the Spartan performances on Saturday, sophomore Logan Singer set a new school record in the 1,000-meter run as the Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track and field teams turned in strong performances at the Joe Banks Invitational, hosted by Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio.

Singer placed first in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:32.43, which breaks the previous school record of 2:33.46 set by senior Michael Hradesky in 2017.

The Spartan men tallied two other first-place finishes throughout the invitational. Senior Jonathan Haling finished first in the 500-meter run with a time of 1:06.97, while senior Grant McCarthy took first in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:52.12.

Other top finishers for the Spartan men included sophomore Kyler Barnard in the 500-meter run (second, 1:10.82), senior David Hall in the 5,000-meter run (second, 15:23.94), junior Eric Rachita in the 3,000-meter run (third, 8:57.52), senior Michael Hradesky in the 1,000-meter run (third, 2:36.81), first-year Keith Roberts in the 500-meter run (fourth, 1:11.38), the men's 4x400-meter relay team of Haling, Roberts, Barnard and first-year Putu Randy Radiarta (third, 3:32.67), first-year Parker Straight in the 1,000-meter run (fourth, 2:37.10), senior Darius Inzar in the triple jump (fourth, 12.42m) first-year Joe Jaster in the mile (fifth, 4:24.04) and junior Ben Baierl in the 60-meter dash (fifth, 7.26).

The Spartan women were led by a first-place finish by junior Taylor Jackson in the shot put with a toss of 12.04 meters. She also placed second in the weight throw with a mark of 15.29 meters. Additionally, senior Samantha Kelts claimed the title in the triple jump with a distance of 10.66 meters.

Junior Madison Vargo added a third-place finish in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 3:15.66, while first-year Melissa Phung finished fourth in the 500-meter run with a time of 1:23.60. Sophomore Grace Bentley placed fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:04.10.

Other top finishers for the Spartan women included first-year Mia Vargo in the high jump (fifth, 1.55m), first-year Kemi Ogundiran in the 400-meter dash (fifth, 1:04.62) and junior Julie Hines in the 200-meter dash (fifth, 27.06).

The Spartans will continue the indoor season next Saturday, February 8th as they travel to Granville, Ohio for the Bob Shannon Invitational, hosted by Denison University.
