2019 CWRU Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Season Recap

2019 CWRU Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Season Recap

The Case Western Reserve University women's track and field team concluded the 2019 outdoor season with many noteworthy performances, compiling seven All-UAA honors at the University Athletic Association Championships, setting four program records and having one individual national champion at the 2019 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

The Spartans capped off their outdoor season with graduate student Cassandra Laios winning the 2019 NCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Track and Field Hammer Throw Championship. She became the 15th NCAA Champion in the 48-year history of CWRU Spartans athletics, and the first since former Spartan men's tennis players Eric Klawitter and C.J. Krimbill claimed the 2014 NCAA Doubles Championship.

Competing her final collegiate event of her career, Laios was seeded second in the hammer with a then school-record mark of 55.96 meters. She finished first in the event with a new school-record toss of 56.34 meters. Laios became the first Spartan track and field athlete to earn a national title during the outdoor season since former Spartan Obinna Nwanna won the decathlon in 2010. In addition, she becomes the first Spartan woman to win a national title during the outdoor season since former Spartan Esther Erb won the 10,000-meter run in 2008.

In addition to her national title in the hammer throw, Laios earned an All-American honor in the discus on the first day of the outdoor championships as she hit a mark of 44.41 meters to place seventh in the event.

Three Spartans also received All-Great Lakes Region recognition from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), based on their performances during the season. Spartans receiving All-Region honors included Laios in the discus, shot put and hammer throw, senior Shannon Carroll in the javelin throw and senior Olivia Newman in the 400-meter hurdles.

Laios finished first in the Great Lakes Region and second in Division III with a school-record mark of 55.96 meters in the hammer throw at the Harrison Dillard Twilight on May 10th. She also finished first in the region and ninth in Division III with a school-record toss of 14.20 meters in the shot put, set at the UAA Outdoor Championships on April 27th. Laios rounded her All-Region honors by finishing first in the region and 15th in Division III in the discus with a school-record mark of 45.11 meters, also set at the Harrison Dillard Twilight.

Carroll was third in the region and 30th in Division III in the javelin throw with a mark of 40.33 meters set at the Gregory Invitational. Newman finished second among Great Lakes competitors and 30th in Division III with a time of 1:03.22, recorded at the UAA Outdoor Championships on April 27th.

At the 2019 UAA Championships, hosted by Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, Laios claimed the three conference titles in throwing events to be named the UAA Outdoor Track and Field Women's Most Outstanding Field Events Performer.

Laios claimed the title in the hammer throw and shot put on Saturday. In the hammer, she hit a mark of 54.69 meters which was a new UAA meet record. She became the fifth Spartan ever to win the event at the UAA Outdoor Championships, joining Amanda Kline (2012), Temi Omilabu (2016), Laios (2017) and Nimi Gupta (2018). Laios also won the conference title in the shot put, becoming just the third Spartan to win the event since 2012. She finished first on Saturday with a new school-record mark of 14.20 meters, which bests her previous school record of 13.48 meters. Her mark was also a new UAA meet record. On Sunday, Laios won the conference title in the discus throw with a mark of 43.78 meters.

Carroll won the conference title in the javelin throw with a mark of 40.33 meters, while Newman claimed an All-UAA honor in the 400-meter hurdles as she placed second with a time of 1:03.22. Freshman Kayla Reece placed third in the hammer throw with a toss of 46.05 meters and the women's 4x100-meter relay team of sophomore Julie Hines, junior Bari Love, freshman Ana Scherf and Newman also added an All-UAA honor by finishing third in the event with a time of 49.24.

In addition to their work on the track and field, 32 members of the Case Western Reserve women's outdoor track and field team received Spring UAA All-Academic recognition.
