CWRU Track & Field Gears Up for the 2019 UAA Outdoor Championships

Case Western Reserve University will head to Atlanta, Georgia for the 2019 University Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Emory University from Saturday, April 27th through Sunday, April 28th.

Field events at the UAA Championships are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, with running events commencing at 1:00 p.m. Action will resume on Sunday, with field events starting at 10:00 a.m., and competition on the track beginning at 11:30 a.m. The final event of the meet - the men's and women's 4x400-meter relay will begin at 2:45 p.m. on Sunday.

Last season, the Spartan men placed fourth out of seven teams at the meet, with Washington (Mo.) winning the UAA Championship, and Carnegie Mellon placing second. Returning All-UAA performers from last year's meet for the Spartan men include junior Dominic Oddo, who finished third in the 400-meter hurdles and also earned a third-place finish in the long jump.

Entering this year's meet, the Spartans have 10 potential entrants ranked in the top-five of men's events in the UAA this season. Leading the way is Oddo, who is the seeded second in the long jump (6.88 meters) and fifth in the high jump (1.85 meters), while junior Brian Holden is the top-seeded competitor in the javelin (56.75 meters) and is also fourth in the hammer (46.90 meters).

Sophomore Trey Razanauskas is second in the 10,000-meter run (30:49.55), while other top-five competitors for the CWRU men this year include senior Ananth Suresh in the triple jump (third, 13.89m), junior Grant McCarthy in the 10,000-meter run (fourth, 31:36.19), sophomore Jordan Butler in the long jump (fourth, 6.73m), junior Jonathan Haling in the 400-meter dash (fifth, 49.01) and freshman J.J. Henson in the discus (fifth, 39.58m).

The CWRU women placed fifth in the team's standings at last year's UAA Outdoor Championships, with Washington winning the meet, followed by Chicago in second and Emory in third. Senior Shannon Carroll will enter the meet after claiming two All-UAA honors last year with a second-place finish in the javelin throw and a third-place finish in the shot put.

Carroll will enter this year's meet as the top-performer in the javelin throw (38.93m). Graduate student Cassandra Laios has the top mark in three other throwing events, the hammer (55.05m), the shot put (13.48m) and the discus (42.08m), while other top-five performances this season by an UAA athlete have been notched by senior Marina Yu in the hammer (third, 45.99m), sophomore Taylor Jackson in the hammer (fourth, 45.85m) and the shot put (fourth, 11.60m), senior Olivia Newman in the 400-meter hurdles (fourth, 1:04.68), junior Abbey Waltz in the pole vault (fifth, 3.55m), sophomore Emma Hammelef in the discus (fifth, 35.50m) and freshman Kayla Reece in the hammer (fifth, 43.68m).
