Laios & Waltz Set School-Records at All-Ohio Championships

With just two weeks remaining before the 2019 University Athletic Association Championships, the Case Western Reserve University track and field teams appeared to be in top form on Saturday, with graduate student Cassandra Laios and junior Abbey Waltz setting program records at the All-Ohio Outdoor Championships in Delaware, Ohio.

Laios earned All-Ohio honors with a first-place finish in the hammer throw with mark of 55.05 meters to best her previous school record of 54.52 meters. Laios added another All-Ohio honor in the shot put, placing second with a toss of 13.29 meters, and in the discus by finishing second with a mark of 42.08 meters.

Waltz placed third in the pole vault with a mark of 3.55 meters, which breaks her previous school record of 3.52 meters set earlier this outdoor season.

Four other Spartans claimed titles on Saturday, as sophomore Trey Razanauskas placed first in the 10,000-meter run (30:49.55, All-Ohio record), junior Dominic Oddo finished first in the long jump (6.88m), sophomore Kiera Olson placed first in the 10,000-meter run (39:32.01) and senior Shannon Carroll finished first in the javelin (38.93m, All-Ohio record).

Other Spartans earning All-Ohio honors for a top-three finish in an event at the meet included senior Olivia Newman in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing second with a time of 1:04.68. For the men, senior Ananth Suresh finished second in the triple jump with a mark of 13.46 meters, junior Grant McCarthy finished second in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 31:36.19, junior Michael Hradesky placed second in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.95, junior Jonathan Haling finished third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.01 and junior David Hall placed third in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:07.08.

Other scoring performances (top-eight finishes) for the CWRU men came from sophomore Jordan Butler in the long jump (fourth, 6.64m), senior Zach Roshon in the 5,000-meter run (sixth, 15:11.17), freshman Logan Singer in the 1,500-meter run (4:00.89), freshman Daniel Grasing in the 1,500-meter run (seventh, 4:02.20), freshman Spencer Weigand in the 1,500-meter run (eighth, 4:02.74), senior Robert Iriye in the 10,00-meter run (seventh, 32:47.96), Singer in the 800-meter run (seventh, 1:58.14), sophomore Thomas Patton in the 800-meter run (eighth, 1:58.28), Suresh in the long jump (eighth, 6.32m), Oddo in the high jump (tied for seventh, 1.83m) and the men's 4x400-meter relay team of Oddo, Hradesky, Haling and freshman Juan Perez (sixth, 3:25.77).

Additional scoring performances for the Spartan women came from the 4x100-meter relay team of Newman, sophomore Julie Hines, junior Bari Love and freshman Ana Scherf (fourth, 49.82), the 4x400-meter relay team of Newman, Hines, junior Maria King and junior Brianna Rees (fourth, 4:05.70), junior Samantha Kelts in triple jump (fourth, 10.97m) and in the long jump (eighth, 4.92m), Hines in the 400-meter dash (fifth, 1:00.21), senior Jennifer Hoffmann in the 1,500-meter run (sixth, 4:50.46) and sophomore Grace Kemerer in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (seventh, 11:51.26).

The Spartan men finished third out of 20 teams at the meet with 92.5 points, while the women placed fifth out of 20 teams with 85 points. Otterbein University won both the men's and women's portions of Saturday's meet.

In addition, junior Madeline Lindemann competed at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic on Saturday and placed 37th in the event with a time of 37:57.02.

Case Western Reserve will now prepare to host the CWRU Invitational on Saturday, April 20th at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio.
