Case Western Reserve University graduate student Cassandra Laios was named the University Athletic Association Women's Field Athlete of the Week, following her performance at the Amy Adams Memorial Invitational at Muskingum University in New Concord, Ohio this past weekend.
Laios claimed titles in the hammer throw, shot put and discus. She won the hammer throw with a school record toss of 52.48 meters, which breaks her previous school record of 51.62 meters set last weekend. In the shot put, she hit a mark of 13.29 meters which broke the previous school record of 13.12 meters set by former Spartan Amanda Kline in 2012. Laios then won the discus with a mark of 40.48 meters.
Laios' marks in all three events currently rank first in the University Athletic Association. In addition, Laios ranks first in all of Division III in the hammer throw, fourth in the shot put and ninth in the discus.
This was Laios' 13th UAA Athlete of the Week honor of her career.
Case Western Reserve will return to competition this weekend, when the squad will be split between two meets. The throwers will be competing at the Carnegie Mellon Mini-Meet in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Saturday, March 30th, while the rest of the team will travel to Westerville, Ohio for the Otterbein April Fool's Invitational, hosted by Otterbein University.
