Case Western Reserve University graduate student thrower Cassandra Laios, sophomore sprinter Julie Hines, junior sprinter Jonathan Haling and senior jumper Ananth Suresh were named the University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week for track and field, following their performances at the YSU Icebreaker on Friday.
Laios finished second in the weight throw with a mark of 16.90 meters, which currently ranks as the top mark in the UAA and fifth among Division III competitors. In addition Laios earned a fifth place finish in the shot put with a distance of 12.79 meters. This was the ninth UAA Athlete of the Week honor of her career.
Hines competed in both the 400-meter dash and the 200-meter dash at the YSU Icebreaker on Friday. Hines placed 29th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.97 and then finished 41st in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.37. Her time of 1:00.97 in the 400m currently ranks second in the UAA, while her time of 27.37 in the 200m ranks ninth in the conference. This was her first UAA Athlete of the Week honor of her career.
Haling finished eighth in the 400-meter dash at the meet on Friday. He crossed the finish line in a time of 49.50, which currently ranks first in the UAA and fifth among Division III competitors. This was his first UAA Athlete of the Week honor of his career.
Suresh earned a ninth place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 12.69 meters, which was the best mark among UAA competitors this past week. This was his first UAA Athlete of the Week honor of his career.
The Spartans will resume competition in the new year, with a road meet on Saturday, January 19th at the SPIRE Invitational in Geneva, Ohio.
