CWRU Track & Field to Compete in Final Meets before NCAAs

The Case Western Reserve University track and field team will split between a pair of meets this week as the team makes a final run at NCAA qualifying marks, with a pair of athletes heading to North Central College in Naperville, Illinois for the Gregory Invitational, and six others scheduled to be in action at the Great Lakes Final Qualifying Meet at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.

Both sophomore Dominic Oddo and junior Shannon Carroll will compete in the multi-events at the Gregory Invitational on Wednesday, May 16th and Thursday, May 17th.  Oddo will be part of the field of 14 competitors for the men's decathlon, while Carroll will be one of 20 currently entered in the women's heptathlon.  This will be the first time that both Oddo and Carroll have competed in the respective events during the outdoor season.

The heptathlon will begin at 10:00 a.m. CT on Wednesday, with the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200-meter dash all taking part on day one.  It will continue on Thursday at 10:00 AM CT with the long jump, javelin and 800-meter run.  The decathlon is slated for a 10:15 a.m. CT start on Wednesday, with scheduled events including the 100-meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400-meter dash.  It will conclude on Thursday, starting at 10:00 a.m. CT, with the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500-meter run.

Scheduled to compete for CWRU at the Great Lakes Final Qualifying Meet on Thursday, May 17th are junior Tyler Bushman, senior Zak Hurd, senior Andrew Ibibo, sophomore Michael Hradesky, senior Grant Mlack and senior Ben Zelkin for the men, and senior Nimi Gupta for the women.  Gupta enters the meet ranked 25th in Division III in the hammer throw (50.48m), while Ibibo is 32nd in the 400-meter dash (48.36 seconds).

Thursday is the final day to record a qualifying mark for the 2018 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, to be held at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse on May 24th – 26th.  The 20 men and 22 women with the best marks in each event will receive an invitation to compete at the National Championship meet.  While Ibibo and Gupta are both on the outer edge of qualifying for the meet, and will need to improve on their marks to earn the right to compete, senior Danielle Kulpins us currently fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:40.17), and is a likely candidate to be competing at the NCAA Championships.

The final list of participants for the NCAA Division III Championships is scheduled to be posted to by 9:00 a.m. eastern time on Saturday, May 19th.  A full release with CWRU's selections will be posted to shortly following the NCAA's announcement.
