Spartan Women Finish Third; Men Sixth at Sparky Adams Invitational

The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track and field teams turned in strong performances at the Sparky Adams Invitational, hosted by Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio on Saturday.

The women scored 104.5 points to finish third out of 11 teams at the meet. Baldwin Wallace won the competition with 148 points, while Ohio Wesleyan placed second with 130 points. In the men's portion of the meet, Case Western Reserve placed sixth with 63 points. Ohio Wesleyan won the meet on the men's side with 143 points. Ashland finished second with 115 points, while Buffalo State placed third with 88 points.

The Spartan women tallied two first-place finishes, as senior Nimi Gupta finished first in the weight throw and senior Rachel Willard placed first in the triple jump. Gupta won the weight throw with a mark of 46.92 meters, while Willard added a first-place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 10.72 meters. Willard also finished fifth in the long jump with a mark of 5.06 meters.

Other top finishers for the Spartan women included junior Shannon Carroll in the javelin throw (third, 36.27m) and in the 100-meter hurdles (fifth, 16.94), freshman Taylor Jackson in the discus throw (third, 35.82m), sophomore Abby Waltz in the pole vault (second, 3.12m), junior Jennifer Hoffmann (third, 4:54.59) and freshman Kiera Olson (fifth, 5:02.45) in the 1,500-meter run, sophomore Emily Herrmann in the 400-meter hurdles (third, 1:09.95), sophomore Bailey Flint in the high jump (fifth, 1.47m) and freshman Julie Hines in the 400-meter dash (fifth, 1:00.60).

The Spartan men were led by a second-place finish by freshman Kai Fletcher in the triple jump with a mark of 12.44 meters. Freshman Jordan Butler added a second-place finish in the high jump with a mark of 1.80 meters. In addition, Butler placed fifth in the long jump with a mark of 6.11 meters.

Other top finishers for the Spartan men included sophomore Dominic Oddo in the 110-meter hurdles (third, 15.68) and in the javelin throw (fifth, 46.74m), senior Alex Nesvisky in the hammer throw (fourth, 45.60m), junior Drew Zapor in the pole vault (fourth, 3.60m) and senior Andrew Ibibo in the 200-meter dash (fifth, 22.38).

The Spartan will now turn their attention to the 2018 UAA Championships, hosted by Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania next weekend. Action at the meet will begin on Saturday, April 28th, and continue through Sunday, April 29th.
