The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track and field teams competed at two meets on Saturday, with the men's and women's track athletes competing at the Marv Frye Invitational, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, and the men's and women's throwers competing at the Bob Kahn Invitational, hosted by Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio.
At the Marv Frye Invite, the Spartan men tallied 17 top-three finishes at the meet, while the women gathered eight top-three finishes during the meet.
Senior Grant Mlack led the Case Western Reserve men, winning both the 110-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles. He finished first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.66 and placed first in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.20. Mlack also teamed with senior Andrew Ibibo, sophomore Jonathan Haling and sophomore Michael Hradesky in the 4x400-meter relay to place first with a time of 3:30.56.
The CWRU men's 4x100-meter relay team of senior Ben Zelkin, senior Zak Hurd, sophomore Darius Inzar and freshman Joe Dinko also added a first place finish in the event with a time of 43.44. In addition, sophomore Dominic Oddo gathered a first-place finish in the long jump (6.80m), a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles (57.00) and a third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (16.02).
Other top performers for the Spartan men at the Marv Frye meet came from Ibibo in the 200-meter dash (second, 22.93) and the 400-meter dash (second, 49.49), Hradesky in the 800-meter run (second, 1:57.04), freshman Jordan Butler in the high jump (second, 1.88m) and the long jump (third, 6.32m), Hurd in the long jump (second, 6.45m), freshman Musa Hakim Jr. in the 200-meter dash (third, 23.26), senior Nicholas Knorz in the 800-meter run (third, 1:57.29), freshman Kai Fletcher in the high jump (third, 1.83m) and junior Ananth Suresh in the triple jump (third, 12.43m).
Winning events for the Spartan women were senior Rachel Willard, senior Danielle Kulpins and senior Marie-Louise Kloster. Willard picked up the win in the triple jump with a mark of 10.73 meters. Kulpins finished first in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:23.40. Kloster placed first in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:08.31.
Kloster also teamed with sophomore Shahed Eid, sophomore Brianna Rees and freshman Julie Hines in the 4x400-meter relay to finish second in the event with a time of 4:12.68. Other top performers for the Spartan women came from junior Jennifer Hoffmann in the 1,500-meter run (second, 4:55.79), Hines in the 400-meter dash (third, 1:02.42), sophomore Tatum Naylor in the 800-meter run (third, 2:25.47) and sophomore Emily Herrmann in the 400-meter hurdles (third, 1:10.23).
At the Bob Kahn Invitational, the Spartan men placed sixth with 40 points, while the women finished seventh with 25 points.
Freshman Skyler Wadas and junior Tyler Bushman highlighted the men's performances at the meet. Wadas finished third in the javelin throw with a mark of 44.95 meters, while Bushman placed fifth in the discus throw with a toss of 37.51 meters.
For the Spartan women, senior Nimi Gupta and junior Shannon Carroll totaled two top-three finishes on Saturday. Gupta placed third in the hammer throw with a toss of 46.02 meters, while Carroll finished third in the javelin throw with a mark of 32.38 meters.
Case Western Reserve will be back in Delaware next weekend, competing at the 2018 Outdoor All-Ohio Championships on Saturday, April 14th.
