Case Western Reserve University seniors Nimi Gupta and Sam Merriman claimed University Athletic Association Championships in their respective events, to lead the Spartans during the first day of competition at the 2018 UAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by CWRU in Cleveland, Ohio at the Veale Athletic Center.
Gupta finished first in the weight throw with a distance of 15.57 meters on her throw in the finals. She scored 10 points towards the Spartan women's team total with her finish in the event.
Merriman claimed the title in the men's 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:46.28. He scored 10 points towards the Spartan men's team total with his finish in the event.
The Spartan women's distance medley relay team of senior Marie-Louise Kloster, junior Isabel Torres-Padin, sophomore Vanessa Pasadyn and sophomore Shahed Eid added a fourth-place finish in the event with a time of 12:33.63.
The Spartan women also added one more All-UAA honor on Saturday with senior Danielle Kulpins finishing second in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:29.27.
The Spartan men added two more All-UAA honors on Saturday with sophomore Dominic Oddo placing second in the long jump with a distance of 6.75 meters and senior Zak Hurd finishing third in the long jump with a distance of 6.63 meters.
Adding points for the Spartan men were freshmen Jordan Butler and Kai Fletcher tying for fifth in the high jump (1.86 meters), senior Alex Nesvisky placing fifth in the weight throw (15.12 meters) and junior Tyler Bushman finishing sixth in the weight throw (15.01 meters).
The men's distance medley relay team of senior Aidan DeSanto, senior Nicholas Knorz, sophomore Jonathan Haling and senior James Gibson added a fifth-place finish in the event with a time of 10:22.30.
After one day of competition, the CWRU women sit in third place in the standings with 22 points. Washington leads in the standings with 42 points, followed by Chicago with 40. The Spartan men sit in second place with 32 points. Washington leads in the standings with 42 points, while Carnegie Mellon is third with 31.
Case Western Reserve is in good position to add onto its team score on Sunday, with five athletes qualifying for finals, following their performances in preliminaries on Saturday. Senior Grant Mlack earned a spot in the 60-meter hurdles after finishing fourth with a time of 8.44, while Oddo will be joining Mlack in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles after finishing sixth with a time of 8.58.
The Spartan men will also have two other finalists competing tomorrow. Haling finished sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.90 and sophomore Michael Hradesky placed sixth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.66.
The Spartan women will have junior Olivia Newman competing in the 60-meter hurdles, after finishing fourth with a time of 9.31, and also in the 400-meter dash, after finishing fifth with a time of 59.78.
The second and final day of the 2018 UAA Indoor Championships is slated to begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday, followed by events on the track at 12:00 p.m.
