Case Western Reserve University sophomore Cassandra Laios was named the University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week for women's field, after her performance in the discus throw at the Toledo Invitational on Friday.
Laios surpassed her career-best mark in the discus throw, finishing ninth in the event at the meet with a mark of 41.38 meters. The throw ranked as the third-best ever by a CWRU competitor, and was the 42nd-best in Division III this year.
This was the first career UAA Athlete of the Week honor for Laios, who earned All-UAA honors in both the discus throw (second) and shot put (third) at the 2016 conference outdoor championships.
Laios and the Spartans will be back in action this week, when the team takes part in the Dr. Keeler Invitational in Naperville, Illinois on Thursday and Friday, and the Gator Invitational in Meadville, Pennsylvania on Friday.
