The Case Western Reserve University men's 4x100-meter relay team of senior Jonathan Freeman, sophomore Adrian Cannon, sophomore Zak Hurd and freshman Rasheed Ajala broke the school record for the second time this season at the Toledo Invitational, highlighting the weekend for the track and field team.
Freeman, Cannon, Hurd and Ajala set the school record in the event with a time of 42.41 seconds, besting the group's own school-record time of 42.54 seconds, set earlier this season at the All-Ohio Championships. The relay finished second overall in the event at the meet.
Another standout performance for the Spartans at Toledo came from Cassandra Laios, who surpassed her career-best mark in the discus throw with a mark of 41.38 meters for a ninth-place finish at the meet. The throw ranked as the third-best ever by a CWRU competitor, and was the 42nd-fastest in Division III this year.
Also in action for the women on Friday, freshman Olivia Newman placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.91, while senior Christen Saccucci finished 10th in the pole vault after clearing the bar at a height of 3.06 meters.
For the men, Ajala led the way in the 100-meter dash with a sixth-place finish in a time of 11.14 seconds, and was followed by junior Nathaniel Wahner in seventh with a time of 11.23 seconds and Hurd in 10th with a time of 11.45 seconds. Wahner also placed fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.71 seconds, with Cannon coming in eighth with a time of 23.02 seconds.
In the men's 800-meter run, junior Joe Ledger finished sixth with a time of 1:55.64 and senior Gabe McLeod placed 18th with a mark of 2:09.11. Senior Jared Brucker rounded out the Spartans' performers at the Toledo Invitational with a height of 4.11 meters in the pole vault, finishing in eighth place.
Also in action for Case Western Reserve was junior Pat Shober, who finished sixth in the javelin throw at the Campbell Wright Invitational at the University of Akron with a mark of 51.22 meters.
The Spartans are scheduled to return to competition at the Dr. Keeler Invitational at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois on May 12th.
