Women Finish Second at Sparky Adams Invitational With Strong Field Performances

BEREA, Ohio - The Case Western Reserve University women's track and field team finished in second place with 125.20 points at the 2015 Sparky Adams Invitational at George Finnie Stadium hosted by Baldwin Wallace University.

Freshman Skylar Braga (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) finished eighth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.96. 

Four Spartans scored in the 100-meter hurdles, led by senior Rachel Tan (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) who took the title crossing the finish line with a time of 15.70. Finishing fifth, sixth and seventh freshman Maryellen Heebner (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) crossed the line with a time of 17.08, senior Sophia Herzog (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) recorded a time of 17.96 and junior Emily Harker (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) finished in 18.19.

In the 400-meter hurdles, senior McKenzie Braun (Omaha, Neb./West Side) finished in first place with a time of 1:07.79. The Spartans also took the sixth, seventh and eight place spots as freshman Natalia Gawlik crossed with a time of 1:11.48, freshman Marie-Louise Kolste (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) followed with 1:11.79 and freshman Lilly Faulk (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) concluded with 1:15.72.

In the 800-meter run, sophomore Abby Casalnova (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) finished with a time of 2:28.17 for fifth place, while junior Laura Wheeler finished in first place in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 11:24.51. Also in distance, freshman Rachel Laveson and junior Veronica Cole crossed the finish line of the 5,000-meter run with times of 19:43.77 and 20:22.52 for sixth and eighth place, respectively.

Tan added more points for the Spartans as she finished third in the high jump clearing the bar set at 1.55 meters, while junior Laurel Shickler (North East, Pa./North East) cleared at the same height for a four-way tie for third place. As part of a five-way tie for seventh, both Harker and Gawlik cleared the bar at 1.50 meters.

In the pole vault, junior Christen Saccucci (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) finished with a mark of 3.20 meters to tie for second place , while in the triple jump, freshman Rachel Willard (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) hopped, skipped and jumped 9.81 meters to finish in sixth.

The Spartans finished third, fourth and fifth and eight in the discus throw. Sophomore Temi Omilabu (Katy, Texas/Seven Hills) led the pack with a toss of 36.29 meters and was followed by freshman Cassandra Laios (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) with a mark of 35.35 meters. Finishing fifth and eighth freshman Nimi Gupta (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) tossed 34.85 meters and senior Emeline Liu (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) finished with a best mark of 30.68.

Laios also finished second in the shot put with a heave of 11.68 meters.

In the hammer throw, which took place on Friday afternoon, Liu finished second overall with a mark of 41.42 meters, Omilabu finished fourth with a throw of 39.99 meters, freshman Rachael Collins (Cave Creek, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) tossed 38.54 meters for fifth place and sophomore Tori Gershom (Lodi, Ohio/Cloverleaf) added points finishing eighth with a mark of 37.04 meters.

Collins also finished second in the javelin with a toss of 30.67 meters, while junior Meredith Shea grabbed an eighth place finish with a mark of 25.72 meters.

The Spartans will now travel to Atlanta for the 2015 University Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships held on Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26.
