WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Led by top performances from junior Sophia Herzog (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) in the field and sophomore Kelsey Aamoth (Solon, Ohio/Solon) on the track, the Case Western Reserve University women's team placed eighth of 18 at the All-Ohio Championship on Saturday afternoon at Clements Recreation and Fitness Center.
The University of Mount Union won the team championship with a score of 110.5. Baldwin Wallace University was runner-up with 91.50 points. The Spartans finished the day with 38 markers.
Herzog turned in a runner-up performance to earn All-Ohio honors in the pole vault by clearing the bar at 10 feet, 11 and three-quarters of an inch.
Aamoth was also a runner-up and finished just four seconds shy of breaking the school record with a time of 10:09.64 in the 3,000-meter run. The second-year Spartans was also part of the distance medley relay team that finished second with a time of 12:39.98. Freshmen Olivia Zabrodsky (Jamestown, N.Y./Jamestown) and Abby Casalnova (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) as well as junior McKenzie Braun (Omaha, Neb./West Side) were All-Ohio performers along with Aamoth.
Last night, a large contingent of Spartans competed at the Mid-February Meet hosted by Baldwin Wallace. Sophomores Laurel Shickler (North East, Pa./North East) and Lydia Greene (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) as well as senior Brooke Simpson (Solon, Ohio/Solon) all won events.
Shickler placed first in the high jump with a mark of 5'0.5". Greene won the 5,000m run (19:48.63), and Simpson topped the field in the mile run (5:25.16). Overall, CWRU finished sixth out of 12 competing institutions.
The Spartans next compete on Friday, February 21 at the Greater Cleveland College Championship hosted at the Harrison Dillard Track in Berea, Ohio. The event is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
