CLEVELAND – The Case Western Reserve University women's track & field team was victorious in dual meet action versus rival Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) by a tally of 70-57 on Saturday afternoon at the Veale Center. Despite the victory, the visitors maintained a higher men's and women's combined score to take home the Obelisk Trophy.
The Obelisk Trophy is awarded to the winning school in what has become an annual dual meet between the two programs started by former CWRU Head Coach Steve Rubin.
Overall, the Spartan women were victorious in seven individual events for the day, three in distance events and four in the field.
Sophomore Kelsey Aamoth (Solon, Ohio/Solon) earned CWRU's first individual victory with a time of 2:26.88 in the 800-meter run. Junior Kristen Ruckstuhl (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) followed up Aamoth's win with a victory of her own in the 5000m run thanks to a time of 18:35.76.
The Spartans also won the distance medley relay with a time of 13:02.57 courtesy of Aamoth, senior Brooke Simpson (Solon, Ohio/Solon), freshman Abby Casalnova (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) and sophomore Juliana Ross (New York, N.Y./Bronx Science).
In field events, junior Keri Walter (Cairo, Egypt/Cairo American) captured first place in the triple jump with a mark of 10.44 meters. Junior Rachel Tan (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and sophomore Christen Saccucci (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) were also victorious amongst jumpers as the former bested the field in the high jump (1.57 meters) and the latter earned the top spot in the pole vault (3.20 meters).
Junior Emeline Liu (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) won the shot put with a toss of 10.46 meters to wrap up the Spartans' individual victories in field competitions.
The Spartans will split squads next weekend with part of the team competing in the annual All-Ohio Combined Events in Granville on Friday and Saturday, February 8-9. The rest of the squad will compete at the Jim Wuske Invitational hosted at the Peterson Fieldhouse in Alliance on Friday.
