The Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team, ranked 29th in Division III, will return to action with three home matches this weekend. The Spartans will take on Indiana University of Pennsylvania at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 29th, and then will face the University of Rochester (N.Y.) at 11:00 a.m. and Wittenberg College at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 1st. All matches will be played at the Cleveland Skating Club.
The Spartans have opened their spring season with a 4-3 record, following a split this past weekend against seventh-ranked Carnegie Mellon University and Otterbein University. CWRU is ranked 29th in the ITA Preseason National Rankings, and seventh in the Central Region Poll.
Sophomores Sneha Karnam (2-0) and Eliza Georgiades (2-0) have each opened their spring seasons undefeated, while the no. 1 doubles duo of junior Madeleine Paolucci and first-year Savannah Bright have combined to go 2-1 in doubles play so far this spring.
Indiana is 3-1 on the year, including a 3-0 road mark. The team is coming off a win over Seton Hill this past Saturday. The team is led by Joanna Stralka who is 15-1 overall, and 2-0 at first singles. The Spartans and Crimson Hawks met last season, with CWRU claiming a 7-2 win over Indiana.
Rochester is 2-1 overall this season, and 0-1 in road contests. The team is coming off a 7-0 loss to NCAA Division I Colgate on Sunday. The team's lineup features Yaya Wang who has posted a 7-3 overall record in singles play, including a 2-1 mark at fourth singles. The Spartans and Yellowjackets last mat during the 2019 UAA Championships, with CWRU earning a 5-1 victory over Rochester in the seventh-place match.
Wittenberg is 2-3 on the year, including a 0-1 record in road matches, and is coming off a 5-4 loss to Mount Nazarene on Saturday. The Tigers will face Indiana University Southeast on Friday, before traveling to Cleveland on Sunday to face the Spartans. This will be the first meeting between the schools since the 2011-12 season, when CWRU claimed an 8-1 win over Wittenberg.
