The Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team will get its 2019 fall season started this weekend, when the team travels to Oberlin, Ohio for the Oberlin Invitational.
The Spartans will be looking to pick up where they left off last season, when they were ranked throughout the campaign and were featured as high as 16th in the poll during the course of the season. The 2018-19 Spartans went 8-11 overall last season, and placed seventh at the University Athletic Association Championships.
The 2019-20 edition of the team will feature a number of familiar faces. Junior Madeleine Paolucci will be the team's top-returning player headed into the fall, after becoming the first All-American singles player in the history of the women's tennis program after picking up a first round win at the NCAA Championships last season. She finished the year with a 19-8 singles record and added a 17-11 doubles record during the year.
Paolucci ended the season ranked 18th among all NCAA Division III singles players and fourth among players in the Central Region, as she currently has the 14th-most singles victories in program history (35-19).
Paolucci was also named to the All-University Athletic Association First Team for her play at no. 1 singles, while the duo of Paolucci and junior Nicole Cardwell earned All-UAA Second Team recognition at no. 1 doubles. Also claiming All-UAA Honorable Mention honors was junior Mira Amin for her play at third singles.
In doubles action, Paolucci and Cardwell went 10-7 together, all in first doubles matches. The duo finished the year ranked fifth in the Central Region. This was the second career All-UAA honor for both Paolucci and Cardwell. Amin claimed her first career All-UAA honor, after posting a 12-10 overall record and a 5-3 record at third singles. For her career, she has posted a 30-19 singles record.
Sophomores Eliza Georgiades (4-9 singles play/ 2-2 in doubles action), Nidhi Jha (11-11 in singles matches/ 6-15 doubles record), Sneha Karnam (9-12 in singles play/ 8-16 in doubles action) and Shreyaa Mukund (8-13 in singles matches/ 10-11 in doubles action) will add experience to the lineup.
In addition, CWRU will be welcoming one junior and four freshmen to the fold, as junior Trisha Sundaram, and freshmen Savannah Bright, Nina Hoog, Rupika Pendyala and Shreya Ramani are all set to begin their Spartan careers during the 2019-20 season.
Case Western Reserve will kick off its campaign this weekend at the Oberlin Invitational in Oberlin, Ohio from Friday, September 6th through Sunday, September 8th. Also in the fall, the Spartans are slated to compete at the Kenyon Invite in Gambier, Ohio from Saturday, September 14th through Sunday, September 15th and the ITA Central Regional Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan from Thursday, September 19th through Saturday,, September 21st, as well as competing at the Carnegie Mellon Fall Invitational in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Saturday, October 5th.
