2018-19 CWRU Women’s Tennis Season Recap

2018-19 CWRU Women’s Tennis Season Recap

The Spartans went 8-11 during the year, and posted a 4-1 record in home matches throughout the year. Case Western Reserve was nationally-ranked throughout the campaign and was featured as high as 16th in the poll during the course of the season. The team went 1-2 at the 2019 University Athletic Association Championships to finish seventh at the event.

The Spartans qualified an athlete for the NCAA Division III Individual Championships, with sophomore Madeleine Paolucci competing in the singles draw for the first time in her career. The sophomore, who became the first All-American singles player in the history of the women's tennis program after picking up a first round win at the NCAA Championships, finished the year with a 19-8 singles record and added a 17-11 doubles record during the year.

Paolucci ended the season ranked 18th among all NCAA Division III singles players and fourth among players in the Central Region, as she currently has the 14th-most singles victories in program history (35-19).

Paolucci was also named to the All-University Athletic Association First Team for her play at no. 1 singles, while the duo of Paolucci and sophomore Nicole Cardwell earned All-UAA Second Team recognition at no. 1 doubles. Also claiming All-UAA Honorable Mention honors was sophomore Mira Amin for her play at third singles.

In doubles action, Paolucci and Cardwell went 10-7 together, all in first doubles matches. The duo finished the year ranked fifth in the Central Region. This was the second career All-UAA honor for both Paolucci and Cardwell.

Amin claimed her first career All-UAA honor, after posting a 12-10 overall record and a 5-3 record at third singles. For her career, she has posted a 30-19 singles record.

The Spartans played a competitive schedule during the season, with 10 of the team's 19 opponents featured in the ITA National Rankings at the time of the match.

In the fall, the Spartans had a number of outstanding performances at the 2018 ITA Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Central Region Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Paolucci and former Spartan Jessica Liu, who graduated after the fall semester, became the first doubles paring the women's tennis program history to win the main doubles draw at the 2018 ITA Central Region Championships.

The duo then represented Case Western Reserve at the 2018 ITA Cup, which was held in Rome, Georgia at the Rome Tennis Center on the campus of Berry College. Liu and Paolucci, the No.-4 seed, bested Bethel University's Maggie Riermann and Grace Riermann 7-6 (7), 6-1 to move onto the semifinals. However, the duo fell in the semifinals of the doubles draw. On the final day, Liu and Paolucci won by default over Emory University's Ysabel Gonzalez Rico and Jessica Fatemi in the third-place match.

In addition to the team's success on the court, three members of the squad were recognized as UAA Spring All-Academic honorees. Individual Spartans recognized included Amin, Cardwell and Paolucci.
