The 34th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team turned in a solid performance at the 2019 University Athletic Association Championships, defeating the University of Rochester 5-1 to finish seventh in the conference tournament at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida on Saturday.
The Spartans seeded seventh in the field, finished the UAA Championships with a 1-2 record, and improved to 8-11 for the season. Rochester, the eighth-seeded squad at the UAA Championships, fell to 6-9 for the season with the loss and finished eighth at the conference tournament.
The Spartans were able to take two of the three doubles matches to carry a 2-1 advantage into the start of singles play. Sophomore Mira Amin and freshman Nidhi Jha bested Abbey Reinhart and Yaya Wang 8-2 at second doubles to gain the early lead, followed by sophomores Madeleine Paolucci and Nicole Cardwell earning an 8-4 victory over Camila Garcia and Cami Ruiz Vega at first doubles. CWRU's lone loss came at third doubles, as freshmen Eliza Georgiades and Kristin Jones fell to Olivia Waysack and Bianca Dyer 8-7.
CWRU claimed the first point in singles play as Paolucci earned a 6-1, 6-4 win over Garcia in the first singles match. Jha then picked up a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Wang at fourth singles, while Georgiades secured the win with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Rina Chen at fifth singles.
The rest of the singles matches were left unfinished, with the matches at the UAA Championships only being played to decision.
The end of the UAA Championships marks the end of the 2019 regular season for the Spartans, who will now await the selection announcement for the field for the NCAA Division III Championships. Individual selections are scheduled to be posted to NCAA.com at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8th.
