Facing NCAA Division I programs at the Detroit Mercy Invitational, hosted by the University of Detroit Mercy in Detroit, Michigan over the weekend, the Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team finished with a combined four wins at the invite.
Action throughout the weekend featured a hidden dual format, with teams facing off for individual results, but not team scores. The Spartans faced Detroit Mercy / Akron in doubles play and Oakland University (Mich.) Bowling Green State University in singles play on Friday, and wrapped up the invite facing BGSU in doubles play and Detroit Mercy / Akron in singles play on Saturday.
Sophomore Mira Amin earned a 3-6, 7-5, 13-11 victory over Oakland's Samantha Galloway on Friday singles play, while also teaming with freshman Sneha Karnam to defeat Akron's Carla Flores and Alexis Steer 7-5 in doubles play.
In addition to those two wins on Friday, senior Jessica Liu claimed a 4-6, 6-1, 10-7 victory over Oakland's Dasha Artamonova in singles play.
Freshman Nidhi Jha claimed the only Spartans' victory on Saturday, as she picked up a 3-6, 6-1, 10-5 win over Akron's Alexis Steer in singles play.
This weekend's action was the final competition for the team as a whole for the fall season. Liu and sophomore Madeleine Paolucci will continue doubles play this fall as they will compete at the 2018 ITA Cup which will be held in Rome, Georgia from October 11th-14th. The event will take place in the Rome Tennis Center on the campus of Berry College. The duo earned the opportunity to compete in the ITA Cup after winning the main doubles draw at the 2018 ITA Division III Central Regional Championships on September 23rd.
