Spartans Compete on Day One at ITA Regionals

The Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team competed on the first day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Central Regional Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan on Friday, September 21st.

Three singles players advanced in the main 128-player draw, while three doubles teams advanced in the 64-team doubles draw.

The duo of senior Jessica Liu and sophomore Madeleine Paolucci, seeded third in the draw, topped Kalamazoo's Ella Knight and Maya Srkalovic 8-1. Sophomore Mira Amin and freshman Nidhi Jha also advanced to the round of 32 on Saturday, earning an 8-4 win over Ohio Northern's Katherine Curry and Olivia Schrager.

Freshmen Sneha Karnam and Shreyaa Mukund, seeded ninth in the draw, capped off the Spartans' doubles victories as they defeated Ohio Wesleyan's Alejandra Coronel and Sydney Simmons 8-1.

In singles play, ninth-seeded Liu claimed a 6-3, 4-6, 10-4 victory over Kenyon's Ilana Blackwood and earned a 7-6 (1), 6-4) win over DePauw's Erin Friedrich. Jha added a 6-0, 6-2 win over Augustana's Madeline Lombardi and then followed that with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Lake Forest's Grace Gould. Karnam capped off the Spartans' singles victories with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kalamazoo's Helen Pelak and a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Albion's Lauren Solano.

Action at the ITA Regional will resume Saturday morning.
