The Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team will get its 2018 fall season started this weekend, when the team travels to Oberlin, Ohio for the Oberlin Invitational.
The Spartans will be looking to pick up where they left off last season, when the squad finished the year ranked 15th in Division III. The 2017-18 Spartans went 15-4 overall last season, and placed fifth at the University Athletic Association Championships.
The 2018-19 edition of the team will feature a number of familiar faces. Sophomore Madeleine Paolucci will be the team's top-returning player headed into the fall, after finishing her freshman season ranked 20th in the final Central Region singles poll. Paolucci and former Spartan Nithya Kanagasegar earned All-America honors last year at the 2018 NCAA Division III Individual Championships following a quarterfinals berth. The duo finished the year with a 23-9 record together, matching the program record for doubles victories in a season.
Senior Jessica Liu, who posted an 11-4 singles record and a 15-3 doubles record last year, will provide leadership to the team, while sophomores Nicole Cardwell (12-6 in singles play/ 23-6 in doubles action) and Mira Amin (18-9 in singles matches/ 8-5 doubles record) will add experience to the lineup.
In addition, CWRU will be welcoming five new freshman to the fold, as Eliza Georgiades, Nidhi Jha, Kristin Jones, Sneha Karnam and Shreyaa Mukund are all set to begin their collegiate careers during the 2018-19 season.
Case Western Reserve will kick off its campaign this weekend at the Oberlin Invitational in Oberlin, Ohio, from Friday, September 7th through Sunday, September 9th. Also in the fall, the Spartans are slated to compete at the ITA Central Regional Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan from Friday, September 21st through Monday September 24th, as well as competing at the Detroit Mercy Invitational in Detroit, Michigan from Friday, September 28th through Saturday, September 29th.
CWRU results from the weekend will be posted to athletics.case.edu as they are made available throughout the tournament, and a recap of the Spartans' performance will be posted to the website at the completion of competition.
