2017-18 CWRU Women’s Tennis Season Recap

The Spartans went 15-4 during the year, and earned six victories over teams that were nationally-ranked at the time of play. Case Western Reserve was nationally-ranked throughout the campaign and was featured as high as 15th in the poll during the course of the season, the highest-ranking in the program's history. The team went 2-1 at the 2018 University Athletic Association Championships to finish fifth at the event.

The Spartans qualified a pair of athletes for the NCAA Division III Individual Championships, with senior Nithya Kanagasegar competing in the singles draw for the fourth-straight season, and teaming with freshman Madeleine Paolucci in the doubles draw. The pairing, which earned All-America honors following a quarterfinals berth at the NCAA Championships, finished the year with a 23-9 record together, matching the program record for doubles victories in season.

Kanagasegar ended the season ranked 36th among all NCAA Division III singles players and seventh among players in the Central Region, as she finished her Spartan career with the third-most singles victories in program victory (56-48). In addition, one more Spartan was ranked in the final Central Region singles poll, as Paolucci (16-11 on the season) was ranked 20th.

In the doubles rankings, Kanagasegar and Paolucci were ranked 10th among all NCAA Division III pairings and second in the Central Region in the final ITA poll.

The duo of Kanagasegar Paolucci were also named to the All-University Athletic Association Second Team for their play at no. 1 doubles, while Kanagasegar earned All-UAA First Team recognition at no. 1 singles. Also claiming All-UAA Second Team honors was Paolucci for her play at second singles.

In addition, senior Peyton Young was tabbed All-UAA Honorable Mention at sixth singles after compiling an overall singles record of 19-5, including a 5-0 mark at sixth singles. Young also teamed with freshman Nicole Cardwell to earn honorable mention honors at no. 2 doubles, after posting a 22-6 record in doubles play, including a 6-2 mark at second doubles.

The Spartans played a competitive schedule during the season, with nine of the team's 19 opponents featured in the ITA National Rankings at the time of the match. Despite the strength of schedule, Case Western Reserve went 6-3 in matches against nationally-ranked opposition over the course of the campaign.

In the fall, the Spartans had a number of outstanding performances at the 2017 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Central Region Championships in Oberlin, Ohio. Kanagasegar, who was seeded second in the singles draw, and Paolucci, seeded ninth in the singles draw, advanced to the quarterfinals of bracket. In addition, Kanagasegar and Paolucci teamed together to finish in the semifinals of the doubles bracket, after entering the draw as the fifth-seeded duo.

In addition to the team's success on the court, four members of the squad were recognized as UAA Spring All-Academic honorees. Individual Spartans recognized included seniors Kanagasegar and Young, junior Jessica Liu, and sophomore Katrin Gurvich.
