The 16th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team defeated the University of Rochester 9-0 at the University Athletic Association Championships on Saturday to advance to the fifth-place match at the conference championships in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
The Spartans will take on 21st-ranked Brandeis University in the fifth-place match on Sunday at 9:00 a.m., after the Judges topped 17th-raned New York University in their consolation match meeting on Saturday. Brandeis is 11-7 overall this season.
Case Western Reserve swept the three doubles matches on Saturday, as senior Nithya Kanagasegar and freshman Madeleine Paolucci topped Camila Garcia and Sravya Gudipudi 8-2 at first doubles, and senior Nina Cepeda and junior Jessica Liu bested Bianca Dyer and Yaya Wang 8-1 at second doubles. Rounding out the doubles victories, the No. 3 duo of senior Peyton Young and freshman Nicole Cardwell earned an 8-1 win over Alex Wolkoff and Abbey Reinhart.
In singles play, Kanagasegar bested Gudipudi at first singles 6-4, 6-3 and Paolucci claimed a 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 victory over Garcia at second singles. Also claiming singles wins for the Spartans on Saturday were freshman Mira Amin at third singles 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) over Wolkoff, Cardwell at fourth singles 6-2, 6-1 over Wang, Cepeda at fifth singles 6-0, 6-0 over Reinhart, and Young at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-3 over Dyer.
The Spartans improved to 14-4 overall with the win, while Rochester dropped to 7-10 with the loss.
