Facing top-ranked NCAA Division III programs at the Middlebury Fall Invitational, hosted by Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont over the weekend, the Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team finished with a combined 5-4 doubles record and a 10-9 singles mark.
Action throughout the weekend featured a hidden dual format, with teams facing off for individual results, but not team scores. The Spartans faced Middlebury College in doubles play on Friday, Williams College in singles and doubles play and Brandeis University in singles play on Saturday, and wrapped up the invite facing Brandeis in doubles and Middlebury in singles on Sunday.
Freshman Mira Amin went a perfect 3-0 in singles play throughout the weekend. Amin topped Brandeis' Michele Lehar 6-4, 6-3 and Williams' Sasha Cayward 6-4, 6-3 on Saturday, and finished the weekend with a 1-6, 6-4, 12-10 victory over Middlebury's Skylar Schossberger on Sunday. Amin also tallied a 1-1 doubles record during the invite, winning a match with senior Nina Cepeda (8-4 over Brandeis' Rachel Zubrinsky and Isabel Cepeda).
Sophomore Katrin Gurvich also posted a perfect 2-0 singles performance, picking up a 1-6, 6-1 10-8 victory over Williams' Ksoosha Ramras on Saturday and an 8-4 win over Williams' Korina Neveux on Sunday. Gurvich also picked up a doubles win with Cepeda (8-6 over Middlebury's Ann Martin Skelly and Emily Bian on Friday).
The duo of senior Peyton Young and freshman Nicole Cardwell secured a pair of doubles wins over the weekend, topping Middlebury's Heather Boehm and Molly Paradies 8-4 and Brandeis' Michele Lehat and Lauren Bertsch 8-6. Young and Cardwell also each picked up a win singles play, with Young defeating Brandeis' Isabel Cepeda 6-2, 6-2, and Cardwell claiming a win over Brandeis' Rachel Zubrinsky 3-6, 7-6 (4), 10-8.
This weekend's action was the team's final competition of the fall season. The Spartans will resume play in 2018, opening their spring season at home against Trinity (Tex.) University on Friday, February 9th.
