CWRU Women’s Tennis to Open 2016 Fall Campaign this Weekend

The Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team will get its 2016 fall season started this weekend, when the team travels to nearby Oberlin, Ohio for the 2016 Oberlin Invitational.

The Spartans will be looking to pick up where they left off last season, when the squad finished the year ranked 20th in Division III.  The 2015-16 Spartans went 14-5 overall for the season, and placed fifth at the University Athletic Association Championships.

The 2016-17 edition of the team will feature a number of familiar faces, although junior Nithya Kanagasegar, the reigning UAA Most Valuable Player and a two-time NCAA Individual selection, will not be with the team in the fall as she studies abroad.  Sophomore Jessica Liu will be the team's top-returning player headed into the fall, after finishing her freshman season ranked 20th in the Central Region for her singles play, going a team-best 17-9 during her inaugural collegiate campaign.

Team captain Jennifer Lowe (7-3 singles record last year) and senior Kennedy Mulholland (3-2 singles record) will provide veteran leadership for the team, while juniors Nina Cepeda (11-3 in singles matches last year) and Peyton Young (5-4 in singles matches) will add experience to the lineup.

In addition, CWRU will be welcoming four new freshmen into the fold, as Lauren Beier, Katie Busch, Katrin Gurvich and Kendal Holladay are all set to begin their collegiate careers during the 2016-17 season.

Case Western Reserve will kick off its campaign this weekend at the Oberlin College Invitational, from Friday, September 9th through Sunday, September 11th.  Also in the fall, the Spartans are slated to compete at the ITA Central Regional Fall Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan from Friday, September 30th through Sunday, October 2nd.

CWRU's results from the weekend will be posted to athletics.case.edu as they are made available throughout the tournament, and a recap of the Spartans' performance will be posted to the website at the completion of competition.
