Case Western Reserve University sophomore Nithya Kanagasegar and senior Sara Zargham were selected to compete at the 2016 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Individual Championships from May 26th – 28th at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Kanagasegar was among the 32 players selected to compete in the singles draw. In addition, she will compete with Zargham in the doubles draw, consisting of 16 teams. The draw for the individual championships, along with seeding, will be released on May 25th, the last day of the team championships.
Kanagasegar was ranked seventh in singles play in the latest ITA Central Region poll. Playing at first singles throughout the season, she went 15-10 during the campaign, raising her career record to 32-23. She was named the first University Athletic Association Most Valuable Player in the program's history, after going 3-0 in singles matches at the conference championships, and earning all-conference second team recognition.
In doubles action, Kanagasegar and Zargham went 12-7 together, including an 8-5 mark in first doubles matches. The duo is ranked third in the Central Region, and earned All-UAA First Team recognition after going 3-0 together at the conference championships in April.
This is the second-straight season that Kanagasegar has been selected to the NCAA Championships, after finishing in the round of 32 in 2015. It will be the second career trip to the NCAA Championships for Zargham as well, who qualified for the singles draw during her freshman season in 2013.
The selection of individuals for the championships is based on won-lost record, strength of schedule, and eligibility and availability of student athletes.
