The 20th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team will be in action at the 2016 University Athletic Association Championships at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida from Friday, April 22nd through Sunday, April 24th.
The field of competition at the UAA Championships is slated to be one of the deepest ever, with seven of the eight teams ranked nationally, and all eight squads appearing in their respective region's latest poll. A total of 15 regionally-ranked singles players and nine regionally-ranked doubles pairings are scheduled to be in action at this year's conference championships.
Case Western Reserve, seeded with at the tournament, will open up play on Friday against the fourth-seeded and nationally 16th-ranked University of Chicago at 9:00 a.m. The winner of the match will advance to play the winner of the contest between top-seeded and nationally top-ranked Emory University and the eighth-seeded University of Rochester, at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
First round matchups on the other side of the draw include ninth-ranked and second seeded Carnegie Mellon University against 30th-ranked and seventh-seeded Brandeis University, and 12th-ranked and third-seeded Washington University (Mo.) against 29th-ranked and sixth-seeded New York University.
Consolation matches between teams that drop their first-round matches will also be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. The championship, third-place, fifth-place and seventh-place matches will each be contested on Sunday at 9:00 a.m.
The Spartans, who finished fifth at last year's UAA Championships, will enter the tournament with an overall record of 12-4, and as winners of five of their last six contests. In addition to being ranked 20th in Division III, the squad is also ranked fourth in the Central Region, and feature regionally-ranked singles players in sophomore Nithya Kanagasegar (seventh) and freshman Jessica Liu (20th) and the region's eighth-ranked doubles pairing of Kanagasegar and senior Sara Zargham.
Chicago, which finished fourth at the 2015 UAA Championships, is 9-4 this season and ranked first in the Central Region, in addition to appearing at 16th in the latest national rankings. The Maroons' lineup features regionally-ranked singles players Ariana Iranpour (second), Rachel Kim (12th) and Lucy Tang (21st) and the third-ranked duo of Kim and Tang.
This will be the second meeting between the two teams this season, following a thrilling 5-4 win for the Spartans over the Maroons in Chicago on April 10th. In the victory, Case Western Reserve picked up doubles wins from Kanagasegar and Zargham in the first match (8-6) and seniors Surya Khadilkar and Michelle Djohan in the second match (9-7). In singles player, Khadilkar earned a 6-2, 6-2 win at third singles, senior Taylor Sweeney won 6-3, 6-4 at fourth singles, and Zargham clinched the team victory with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 win at sixth singles.
