For the first time in her career, Case Western Reserve University freshman Jessica Liu was named the University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week for women's tennis, after winning each of her three singles and doubles matches for the 21st-ranked Spartans at the Blue-Grey Invitational.
Liu played second singles in all three matches, and teamed with senior Taylor Sweeney at third doubles throughout the weekend. In an 8-1 team win over Bates on Friday, she picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win in singles play, and added an 8-0 win in doubles action. On Saturday, during the Spartans' 8-1 win over the 29th-ranked College of New Jersey, Liu claimed victories of 8-6 in doubles and 6-3, 6-2 in singles. She rounded out the weekend with a pair of wins against the 18th-ranked University of Mary Washington in a 6-3 team loss, defeating her singles opponent 6-3, 6-4 and picking up a 9-7 doubles win.
Liu leads the team in singles wins this season with a 13-4 record, including an 8-2 mark in the spring, and has gone 11-3 in doubles play during the year.
The Spartans improved to 7-3 on the year with the 2-1 weekend. The team will open its home outdoor schedule this weekend, when Case Western Reserve plays host to 23rd-ranked Denison University on Saturday, March 26th at 4:00 p.m.
