OBERLIN, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team opened the 2014 fall season with a 37-8 combined overall record at the Oberlin College Invitational. The three-day event took place on the Dun Hunsinger Courts from Friday, September 12 through Sunday, September 14.
Five different Spartans ended the three-day event undefeated. They were senior captain Marianne Bonanno (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont), juniors Surya Khadilkar (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Hawken School), Michelle Djohan (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) and Sara Zargham (Torrance, Calif./California Academy of Math and Science), and freshman Nithya Kanagasegar (Crossville, Tenn./Cumberland County).
Bonanno partnered with Khadilkar to for a 3-0 mark in doubles play. Individually, each was 3-0 in singles. Bonanno defeated Adrienne D'Alewyn of Ohio Wesleyan University, 6-2, 6-1, Grace Porter of Oberlin, 6-4, 6-7, 1-0, and Heather Abzug of Denison University, 6-0, 6-2. Khadilkar was a straight-set winner in each of her matches, defeating Maddie Boster of Denison, 6-0, 6-2, D'Alewyn, 6-0, 6-1, and Taryn Stromback of Ohio Northern University, 6-3, 6-2.
Likewise, Kanagasegar and Zargham also paired to form an unbeaten doubles team, while each went 2-0 in singles play. Kanagasegar scored victories over Otterbein University's Sammi Kruger, 6-2, 6-1, Ohio Northern's Meghan Letizia 6-2, 6-1, and D'Alewyn, 6-1, 6-0. Zargham also went unblemished in singles, winning matches versus Meg Chiumento of Denison, 6-3, 6-0, Sammi Kruger of Otterbein, 6-1, 6-4, and Emily Holloway of Denison, 6-0, 4-6, 11-9.
Djohan was the fifth Spartan to record a perfect record over the weekend. She scored singles wins over Mayada Audeh of Oberlin, 6-1, 6-2, and Maddie Boster of Denison, 6-0, 6-2. Djohan also partnered with sophomore Sarah Berchuck (Dallas, Texas/Baylor School & Suffield Academy) for a pair of doubles wins over teams from Oberlin and Ohio Northern.
The Spartans will return to action next weekend at the USTA/ITA Central Region Championship in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
