CHICAGO – Despite leading 2-1 after doubles and 2-0 days for sophomores Taylor Sweeney (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern) and Michelle Djohan (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake), the No. 23 nationally ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team fell, 5-4, to University Athletic Association foe and 12th ranked University of Chicago on Friday evening at Stagg Courts.
The Spartans (8-8) earned the two doubles points over the Maroons (8-7) thanks to a win at No. 2 by freshman Sarah Berchuck (Dallas, Texas/Baylor School & Suffield Academy) and sophomore Surya Khadilkar (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Hawken School) as well as a victory at No. 3 courtesy of Sweeney and Djohan.
Unfortunately, only Sweeney and Djohan were able to earn victories in singles compettion as the hosts rallied for the deciding point in the third set of fourth singles. Sweeney won, 7-5, 6-4 over Helen Sduizhkov at No. 3, and Djohan beat Laura Anderson 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6.
The Spartans next take on No. 9 Washington University in St. Louis and Coe College tomorrow (April 12). The matches are set to begin at 9:00 a.m. (CT)
