CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 26 nationally ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team concluded its 2014 spring break trip with a hard fought 6-3 defeat at No. 5 Claremont McKenna-Mudd-Scripps College on Wednesday evening.
The Spartans dip to 5-4 for the season after playing their second top-10 opponent of the week. CMS evens its season mark at 5-5.
The Spartans built a 2-1 lead in doubles with wins at No. 2 and 3. Freshman Sarah Berchuck (Dallas, Texas/Baylor School & Suffield Academy) and sophomore Surya Khadilkar (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Hawken School) defeated Chloe Dobbert and Sarah Kukino, 8-6 at No. 2, before sophomores Taylor Sweeney (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern) and Michelle Djohan (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) topped Crystal Lim and Yvonne Kilomanova, 9-8.
In singles, Khadilkar completed an undefeated day with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory over Likomanova at No. 6.
CWRU is now idle until a trip to Virginia for the Blue/Grey Invitational at the end of the month. The Spartans play the University of California-Santa Cruz, Skidmore College (N.Y.) and Johns Hopkins University (Md.) beginning on Friday, March 28.
