GAMBIER, Ohio – The No. 25 nationally ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team continued its strong start to the season with a 7-2 victory versus Kenyon College on Sunday afternoon at the Jasper Tennis Center.
The Spartans (3-0), ranked 25th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, have started the spring portion of the schedule with three straight wins for the third season in a row.
Two Spartans finished the day with wins in both singles and doubles play, while the team as a whole only dropped three sets overall.
Sophomores Taylor Sweeney (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern) and Michelle Djohan (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) each won their singles matches and were paired together in a victory at No. 2 doubles.
In singles action, Sweeney defeated Jenna Murray 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2, while Djohan beat Samantha Murphy 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3. Together, the duo defeated the pairing of Elisa Altschuler and Madison Hoffman, 8-2.
Djohan improves to 3-0 in singles play this spring, while Sweeney is now 2-1. As a doubles partnership, the sophomores are 2-0.
Sophomores Surya Khadilkar (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Hawken School) and Lauren Rovner (Lima, Ohio/Shawnee) stayed undefeated in singles play for the spring with wins as well. Khadilkar beat Samanta Betts 2-6, 6-0, 6-0, while Rovner topped Altschuler 6-1, 6-2. Freshman Sarah Berchuck (Dallas, Texas/Baylor School & Suffield Academy) was also a winner in singles for the Spartans with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Hoffman.
The doubles partnership of sophomore Sara Zargham (Torrance, Calif./California Academy of Math and Science) and freshman Jennifer Lowe (Overland Park, Mo./Blue Valley Northwest) rounded out the CWRU wins on Sunday with an 8-6 victory over Abigail Younger and Murphy.
The Spartans next compete in Sewanne, Tennessee when they play No. 2 Emory University (Ga.) and Sewanee: The University of the South on February 22-23. The Saturday match against Emory is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
