KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Seeds have been announced for the singles portion of the 2013 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship, and Case Western Reserve University freshman Sara Zargham (Torrance, Calif./California Academy of Math and Science) will open play in the second match on Thursday, May 23 at Stow Stadium.
Zargham, who will make history as the first woman from Case Western Reserve to compete at the event, squares off with Megan Buell, a sophomore from Washington & Lee University (Va.). Buell is ranked sixth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic South Region for a team that reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Overall, 32 players will compete for the singles title this weekend beginning at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. Finals are scheduled for Saturday, May 25.
In her rookie campaign, Zargham finished the regular season in a tie for the fifth spot in the ITA Central Region poll. The first-year Spartan had ranked as high as third earlier in the spring.
Overall, Zargham has compiled a singles record of 16-10 with 15 matches at the No. 1 position and a doubles mark of 14-9 with five different partners. During the fall season, Zargham advanced to the semifinals in the Flight A draw of the USTA/ITA Central Region Championship.
The Spartans (12-9) finished the regular season as a team with the No. 24 ranking in the ITA national poll. The 2012-13 season marked the first in program history where the team was nationally ranked.
