No. 22 Spartan Women Advance to Fifth-Place Match with 8-1 Win Versus NYU at UAA Championship

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The No. 22 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team eased past New York University by an 8-1 score to advance to the fifth-place match at the 2013 University Athletic Association Championship Tournament on Friday afternoon at Sanlando Park.

The Spartans, ranked fourth in the rugged Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central region, improve to 12-8 overall and 1-1 in the Association. The team will now take on No. 6 seed Brandeis University (Mass.) on Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m.

Versus the Violets (5-5, 1-1 UAA), the Spartans grabbed all three points in doubles action with senior Erika Lim (Fullerton, Calif./Fullerton Union) and freshman Taylor Sweeney (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern) winning at No. 1 by a narrow 9-8 (7-5) score versus Ashley Masanto and Alison Wang. At No. 2, sophomore Alexandra Lim (Fullerton, Calif./Fullerton Union) and freshman Michelle Djohan (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) cruised to an 8-1 victory versus Mari Tzakis and Madeline King.

In the bottom flight, senior captain Kathleen Evers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) teamed with classmate Emily Pham (Mason, Ohio/William Mason) for an 8-2 win versus Becky Kumar and Jazmin Colling.

In singles play, the Spartans won five of the six points in straight sets. In the top spot, freshman Sara Zargham (Torrance, Calif./California Academy of Math and Science), the Central Region's third-ranked player, won by identical set scores of 6-1, 6-1 versus Masanto. At No. 2, Erika Lim bested Wang by tallies of 6-3, 6-2 before the Violets claimed the point in the No. 3 slot.

In the bottom three slots, sophomore Marianne Bonanno (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont) defeated King by tallies of 6-1, 6-0, while Alexandra Lim surrendered just two games in a 6-0, 6-2 victory versus Ramya Pokala at No. 5.  

In the sixth spot, Djohan claimed the team's eighth and final point with a 6-0, 6-3 win versus Alexandra Ziarko.
